Quick recap
  • Conversational tenses you produce: présent, passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait, futur proche, futur simple, conditionnel présent, conditionnel passé, subjonctif présent, impératif — plus the "near-tense" chunks aller + inf (close future) and venir de + inf (recent past).
  • Literary tenses you only recognise: passé simple, passé antérieur, subjonctif imparfait. Each has a modern equivalent in speech.
  • Il y a across tenses: il y a / il y avait / il y a eu / il va y avoir / il y aura / il y aurait. Plus il y a + duration = "ago."
  • Irregular forms reference: 20 past participles (eu, été, fait, pris, mis, dit, vu, su, dû, voulu, pu, venu, ouvert, écrit, lu, bu…), 3 irregular present participles (étant, ayant, sachant), 3 irregular imperatives (sois, aie, sache).
  • Master first: présent + passé composé + imparfait carry most conversation.
  • The circumflex on qu'il fût, qu'il mangeât is the giveaway for the imperfect subjunctive.
